10th Grade: H.W.#11, Due 2/17, Thursday

1. Read the next two chapters, entitled “Gotama” and “Awakening.”
2. Re-read the sheet with the model entries and roles specified in order to produce a good first entry. Read the sample response for your particular role you are supposed to have for Friday before writing your own.
3. Write your first journal entry in the role you selected during class. This must be posted on Google Classroom in a doc, printed out and brought to class each day. Reminder: you will receive a cumulative grade for all of the journals that will reward you with a major assessment grade.

ALL of your journal entries should have the following header:

Your Name                                               Journal 1. H.W.#11
European Literature             (Role: ________)
Date

5. If you haven’t yet done so, print out the vocabulary sheet. You’re going to have to memorize these words for the vocabulary test (details to follow), so, begin by copying/pasting the first three words on this list onto index cards.

Vocabulary: siddharthavocabulary1
Glossary: siddharthaglossary

Consult this sheet whenever you hit a word that refers to Buddhist concepts with which you may not be familiar. Always bring this sheet to class.

NOTE:

Literary circles offer you an opportunity to reveal your innermost thoughts about many aspects of your own life. As a result, sometimes you may forget that you are talking to a diverse group of classmates with views and experiences that are diametrically opposed to the ones you have come to accept. This is totally fine. In the past, a few students made rather insensitive comments and generalizations about whole groups of people. Please be aware that culturally, religiously or racially insensitive comments really do hurt people. Just put yourself into the shoes of a classmate whose religious affiliation or ethnic group you casually mock. How would you feel? Therefore, when the first round of sharing out your journal happens tomorrow, I urge you to think carefully before you speak, consider your own ideas with care, and make sure that you do not say anything on purpose that is personal and hurtful.
