12th Grade: H.W.#1, Due Monday, 9/21 or Tuesday 9/22

All right, that was fun! If you haven’t uploaded your video yet on FlipGrid, do so. Also, make sure you RESPOND to at least one other person’s video. LASTLY, as an experiment now, LINK THE FLIPGRID video to the Google Classroom assignment, so that it comes up as completed. It should upload the video there as well.

H.W.#1 DUE MONDAY or TUESDAY

I. Print out and read Essay Progression 1 CollegeEssayDraftProgressionsBring the document to class. Be prepared to answer the following questions  in class by making some of your observations in writing on the hard copy. (You don’t have to answer all of these questions in writing, just the ones that you deem the most helpful for your own work). We will spend time on these drafts in class.

  1. What is in the first draft that is consistently retained until the last draft?
  2. What disappears from the text? How does the elimination of the elements you identified make the college essay stronger or weaker?
  3. What literary techniques are used in this narrative?
  4. What organizational changes can you identify from draft to draft?
  5. What makes this essay emotionally engaging?
  6. How does the applicant sneak in, as it were, some of his or her interests without necessarily sounding boastful?
  7. Which part of this college essay is most effective? Why?
  8. How does the introduction evolve? Which draft’s introduction is most effective? Why?
  9. What do you want to emulate from this essay when it comes to writing your own? 10. What are some of your own observations about these drafts?

II. Go to Amazon, type in my name, and find my book, The College Essay Guidebook. Click on Inside Look to see the first six writing discoveries and other material in it. Do the first two and/or any others you have time for, especially if you have NOT done quality brainstorming yet. The first one may be a bit intense (use your phone if you don’t have a mirror).

Enjoy your weekend!
